Don't pray in the rain, or swear upon your mother, stuff you can't fake, hope you can use, costs that you smother, places without refuge, see that portrait, of a wounded trooper, it’s got your name, whatever you choose, don't curse or bother, who pays the dues, whisky fires the brain, good men live without trouble, then run away, no book or dawn curfew, makes you a brother, despite all the feuds, gains that you'll make, seek as a lover, spirits of the freeway, they won’t mask thunder.

If I warm my toes, around your fire, why start to deny, that what you lose, for many a lie, is lost on my excuses, a chance to show, on dancing wires, that I can grow, am not just the fool, who plays for the time, runs with other fools, no more than now, what is made right, by these holy vows, my blood's smoky blue, why do you require, to know what’s true, I'm getting old, don't need a sign, to live without windows, or drink your wine.

Your eyes shine too late, in rooms where no one goes, champagne cognac to chase, forget how much we blew, kick the need to show, steer away from news, we’re always just too late, paying off the loan, tackle what remains, you never seem to rue, the way we’ve been let down, no longer part of you, why worry without the gain, at supper hide your groans, whistle off your pain, say it’s all a ruse, a dream of yesterday, no such part of you, wouldn't it be great, to live our life abroad, throw out all the hate, live it on the blow.

Fire and evening light, when you play my tune, don’t even have to try, longing for my phone, that doesn't ring with blues, Nokia or 0 Two tones, this beach has come to life, cool grains here to sooth, not lost on Freeway tyres, brings grace to our bones, accepts all that we do, even to atone, a return to paradise, we never make the news, just want a better life, to shelter all that's gone, someone we can glue, far from being alone, you’re not always nice, never say what’s true, kiss the warm night, know what it is to lose.

Why beat at the stalls, sit down in the rain, hover at infirmary's door, you are never at home, it’s just the same, stuff that makes you roam, what am I saying this for, there’s nothing to gain, while you run with whores, can't you atone, dance away my pain, recognise love’s not a loan, you know the score, your face a savage shade, I’m praying you roar, don't spit on the floor, or cry out my name, you’re not needed anymore, you always touch the bone, I never want to say, this time it’s too raw, to face myself again.

Happy songs in my car, hot water in my tank, it only leaves a scar, blown by your forays, a ticking from the crank, an awful terrible waste, you peer within the dark, make even sunshine dank, scatter ashes on the bar, what is left to say, my mind fills up blank, clings to a brighter day, Oh, you are a dog, no one else to thank, rolled me like a log, brought me to this state, no one else to thank, what’s left anyway, we never know how far, what lies down the track, to see what's going on, how much in the bank?

Sometimes I ask why, can we ever atone, our eyes run wild on fire, it could be shame, that lights our bitter home, each night and every day, not blessed with foresight, the wind runs cold, you leave another time, kids and dogs bear your name, why get stoned, just try and stay sane, when you hear me cry, don’t leave a hanging phone, it's not enough to sigh, buy some shiny nails, help me with the loans, a house is not a jail, no matter how we fight, or bruise our yellow bones, we can do this right, beyond the credit zones.
