Some things you can't rule,
in this gentle rain,
no need for winter fuel,
scrubbed by desire,
I hear myself say,
it's only by fire,
wait for the good news,
buckle down the highway,
untroubled by the Blues,
like birds on a wire,
it’s hard to ascertain,
who's the biggest liar,
she boils me in a stew,
adds salt to the taste,
love’s a bitter fruit,
she doesn't ask why,
I dance without shame,
lost in the sky,
who needs a fool,
to turn the earth grey,
you'll find what you lose,
when spring comes again

We drink together for company,
God knows if you’re right,
we’ll always need sympathy,
what's with these few,
who stay out of sight,
only come awake at noon,
they leave us no peace.
fear grips their sight,
worry guides their being,
our dreams sharp as new,
marching up to sunlight,
we won’t truck with fools,
you say look how easy,
it is to sail the sky,
nothing stands our scrutiny,
we're so happy and cool,
in the morning fire,
everything we say and do,
you can taste the sea,
don’t say way up high,
you’re as scared as me,
ask who turns the tide?

Parade all the while,
when you’re on the way,
walk the lonely miles,
in your bones,
you’re not meant to stay,
alone,
you leave the good times,
for your holy grail,
you don’t have a dime,
can you atone,
when it's blowing a gale,
you’re that far gone,
flip a coin to the sky,
think of hoisting sail,
your shirt is just fine,
drink wine from a Jeroboam,
covet some desolate mail,
throw stones at your ghosts,
what is it to cry,
when love’s like a snail,
you're not going to lie,
it’s no worse than jail.

What you can't find,
makes you think again,
don’t buy more wine,
go home,
there's too much pain,
stick to your own,
you hear these whines,
standing in the rain,
everything's fine,
drenched to the bone,
I’ve been no angel,
soft swish of my tones,
why try to disguise,
each day’s claim,
a roll of the dice,
I don't trust I' phones,
they perish the mind,
love’s overblown,
it just takes a while,
to catch a fast train,
dance with the time,
face no-one's blame

Gone is the time,
I stare straight at you,
you’re a real dime,
you don’t make it easy,
what you’ve been through,
to see it in me,
cashmere’s fine,
to stamp out the blues,
but not in July,
you don’t do breezy,
why disguise the truth,
the way you speak,
hard times besides,
you use as a tool,
to sharpen my mind,
shake the car keys,
am I your mule,
each day’s no Odyssey,
I’m just in line,
to catch more sad tunes,
no more sweet wine,
not from you.

You can swear and blow,
it's never too late,
if you want to come home,
no need to face ruin,
or worry about an escape,
you're no one's fool,
a rolling stone,
at some broken gate,
luck is when it rolls,
but you better come soon,
drunk on the waves,
I’ll forget about you,
so close to the zone,
you'll sink in the glue,
when you’re alone,
never mind the looks,
you'll always need loans,
to swing on my hook,
you're too cool to roam,
nothing else to gain,
no knife to your throat,
better stay safe.

I’m never a girl,
that curses and blasts,
my mind in a whirl,
a face set like stone,
when I’m brassed,
it's best you count now,
don't look scared,
turn away trapped,
I won’t rattle my pearls,
see your ghost,
strung to collapse,
those lies are your own,
your head starts to twirl,
your teeth in a glass,
say prayers downstairs,
cry on the doorpost,
drink tea aghast,
ask what I need most,
I’ll turn the flame down,
cook with gas,
my flags unfurled,
you can relax.
