They know what I mean,
how I roam,
face down every deal,
cool but burn with rage,
when I try to atone,
she always closes the gate,
says it’s not her scene,
when my nerves are blown,
asks where I've been,
useless to prevaricate,
what is on the bone,
always too late,
never listens to me ,
bringing garage flowers home,
my side of testimony,
I’ll wave goodbye to hate,
call if the kids need clothes,
her turn now to wait,
I wonder how it seems,
when she hears me phone,
will she stand the heat,
now I’ve gone?

I feel the loss of you,
stepping off this train,
that much is certain
my face is like stone,
it sends anyone that way,
on the Streets or Metro,
I haven’t got a clue,
what to say today,
do I pay my dues,
you arranged the loans,
introduced me to the reprobates,
told me to be strong,
now look what’s new,
my voice flares and fades,
Is this really an issue,
when I used to moan,
you tried to erase,
everything I called a home,
they all wail on cue,
lowering you to the grave,
truth is a bitter fruit,
I cry just the same.

Eugenia
From her brown garden seat,
she carries a load,
secrets spill like poppy seed,
stuff you keep,
like fancy French cologne,
she whispers her feelings,
let others weep
surrender perfume soaked,
to drink her whisky neat,
lives by a swollen creek,
the bible has a hold,
grandma just rolls her sleeves,
a rifle next to the sheets,
she's no rolling stone,
a better cure than ease,
won’t bathe in love's defeat,
but still enjoys her home,
a time for feasts,
she measures the string beans,
no public telephones,
down fields of blue wheat,
she's never alone.

I'm a fool at dawn,
to feel an utter mess
shuffle to the door,
I should be at sea,
on a wooden raft,
where there's time to dream,
summon ancient forms,
erect my little mast,
sail with perfect calm,
speak evenly,
not roar in distress ,
where you pay dearly,
if you’re torn,
living a life like this,
my time isn't done,
I shall range the Ocean,
adjust my compass,
search for something to be won,
navigate Cape Horn,
would you be impressed,
love without scorn,
that would be a gas.

Don't Forget you're better,
red lipstick on your lips
even if they stick together,
you don’t come here to booze,
kissing your fingertips,
there's more good news,
love is not forever,
when you laugh and skip,
time at all or never,
kick off Monday’s shoes,
roll around your hips,
now’s the time for truth,
nothing beats duress,
giving liars a clip,
grab hope at its crest,
who needs a little dress,
when you paint like this,
Juke Box plays your request,
would you be lesser,
if you stood there stripped,
binned all his letters,
wise in what you miss?

Who can speak of empathy,
sitting on a wall,
a neighbour to the sea,
when your eyes come awake,
they dance on thorns,
view the stuff that’s fake,
each day of being happy,
echoes in my calls,
then it hits me,
who wants to stake,
a life of being torn,
so I hesitate,
the same old electricity,
spins penny for my thoughts,
let’s start with infidelity,
it’s a different take,
than being forlorn,
another bill of lading,
shivering I don’t want to be,
the one who’s caught,
please don’t look that way,
as if I'm never born ?

What dreams do we keep,
they ask us the ghosts,
sat on safe dark seats,
leave us alone thank you,
our faces might need soap,
but we have the news,
we are not at liberty,
to crack old jokes,
just let us be,
do what we always do,
as much as we know,
we don’t need your views,
a ticket for the entry,
to that garden of hope,
you hang on the breeze,
ask if that’s true,
even give a little bow,
we’ve heard your tunes,
to set ourselves free,
don’t you worry Joe,
we'll fire our own beliefs,
throw away the ropes.

Your face set like stone,
not like this on ecstasy,
tell me all you know,
chipped away by time,
the daily useless commentary,
a life combined with mine,
half gashed without shaving foam,
when life hangs me,
I’ll stretch out alone,
on Sunday's drink wine,
until the time I freeze,
when your turbulent mind,
strums tunes on a tooth comb,
dances inside me,
smells like a new born,
your house on the shore line,
the bottom of a road,
will you smell the Limes,
as my body loudly groans,
act care free,
make appeals on the ‘phone,
watch morning TV ?

What do you care,
the pull on my traces,
that makes me follow,
a song in blue trees,
thick lines on my face,
cracked on the breeze,
if you can share,
at memory’s gate,
why not send me there,
in chains to the sea,
unlike your gaze,
that seeps electrically,
it’s hard to be here,
when your voice is raised,
lips that snare,
on broken streets,
where no one runs hesitates,
I’ll be on retreat,
you say It's not fair,
if your tune’s so great,
why are you so unaware,
of passing days?

You take off your gloves,
in your own time,
say you're no longer in love,
do you remember the tune,
that forgives broken lives,
it still beats true,
there’s not much cover,
if you touch that line,
don't reach it in blood,
no one will hate you,
when the bell chimes,
fix up the bed room,
give to those who scrub,
lead a generous life,
stay away from crackpots,
like you never knew,
the mysteries of wine,
hear your heart go boom,
listen to what's above,
shudder without a Dime,
fly like a released dove,
when it feels right.

We claim and duly swear,
first to hit the spot,
is the one who gets them in,
no drama or lucky stars,
boring debts and mounting cost,
you just buy a jar,
the sun’s bright under glare,
the sidewalk lit with dots,
no one hides out here,
for anyone who makes their mark,
another folds the cards,
there are no easy starts,
lemon trees laid bare,
rusty nails our lot,
we always have to share,
face danger near or far,
before any cop,
fairy queen or jack tar,
bones stripped bare,
on streets sweaty and hot,
we’ll defend our turf,
what we haven’t got.

On a bed that creaks,
I listen to the rain,
and turn somehow to speak,
this is not my tune,
I say,
but my words aren’t new,
the walls are washed green,
a moon prevaricates,
it knows where I've been,
Paris and sunlit avenues,
are not just a keepsake,
but places I well knew,
wrapped in a cotton sheet,
I pull a long face,
it reaches to my knees,
outside is a Magnolia bloom,
this bunk’s like a cradle,
you can smell the Ocean,
it’s a joy to squeeze,
love from many lives taken,
a manner so to speak,
the times I’m great.

Don't sing me your Blues,
stammer on the wire,
say everyone pays some dues,
life isn't a stone,
left in the fire,
you have to extoll,
whoever breaks the news,
why you’ve cancelled the choir,
brings more singular truths,
business is in my bones,
it poisons all desires,
I’ll always be alone,
I’ve read all the books,
they don’t really inspire,
except stay away from booze,
this café is my ruin,
but I’ll always aspire,
to wear my best shoes,
each little bit of me,
that everyone requires,
gives them no clue,
I’m not a liar.

Are there any good parts,
she smiles and says,
they're not in your heart,
I look at the moon,
a spring tide today,
everything comes around too soon,
cool but my eyes spark,
wouldn't it be great,
to make a new start,
to find something new,
I listen but wait,
she doesn’t hear my truth,
a psychiatrist on a handcart,
emotion's just a name,
I'll sell the car,
sometime soon,
she judges, berates,
then what’ll you do,
kisses me near the bar,
you’re a fool she states,
I see a bright star,
why hesitate ?

Tunes jingle and you sway,
my insides screech,
got to make my case,
between home and leaving you,
help me to say,
what I need to do,
my tear-streaked face,
lemon blue by TV,
shows how fate,
kills the truth,
is it our own conceit,
we jump so many hoops,
others come here too late,
eager to squeeze,
love from this pooped party,
they re- echo old news,
of a coward's deceit,
how I put on dancing shoes,
is there a way,
you can set me free,
wipe clean the slate,
succour my release ?

She laughs and hums a tune,
says its stupid to lie,
she’ll leave that to me,
like a dog far from home,
she doesn’t want a fight,
just leave her alone,
the elephant in the room,
trumps another sigh,
the children make her blue,
always late coming home,
their ask’s a constant why,
she worries when they roam,
if they blow the juice,
she’s sick of denying,
what is left to rue,
guilty people do atone,
but this snuffled exercise,
a constant runny nose,
she says because of you,
hands supplicate the sky,
what else is she to do,
take up flying?

Times we ought to share,
a burnt light of feasting,
makes me dream of elsewhere,
let others condone,
that passing daydream,
of a loving family home,
more than any dare,
I’ll do what's needed,
don’t need the stairs,
to hear love's angry tones,
swell around my knees,
like broken water,
it really isn’t fair,
I know what I’m leaving,
an eternal duty of care,
a worn loading stone,
it’s now only me,
swear that it's over,
at play or in prayer,
cry that I’m released,
shake the sun from my hair, s
look over the sea.

My vision comes quite late,
I don’t quite believe,
what it has to say,
you roll within my thunder,
exploding like a spray,
lost in moans and numbers,
you'll find out one day,
when you retrieve,
plans you’ve thrown away,
my mind is still uncluttered,
but inside I can reach,
the need for love,
I won’t stand betrayed,
by your retreat,
or sing any last refrain,
it makes you wonder,
stones, graves, wreaths,
who splits who asunder,
the memory of your face,
is easy to receive,
I'm making my own way,
listening to the sea.

Mattie
Now and then she’s right,
I’m just skimming,
something shows me why,
like the river off Burbo Bank,
shining, arrowing, twisting,
me a dark room crank,
she loves the sunlight,
knows her own following,
if someone make her cry,
lungs open like a tank,
she knows how to fight,
when everything turns black,
next to me like a bride,
her eyes moist and filling,
she’ll give a loving sigh,
tobacco blonde dank,
her whole life is swimming,
she’ll make out I’m slack,
dance in the tide,
her fame is just beginning,
her smile like a knife,
fresh, alive, winning.

Something says we're done,
you don’t need a sunset,
our ashes blown and gone,
give God his due,
he’ll take any stupid bet,
doesn’t wait for thank- you,
fire and distant thunder,
traps have all been set,
the unfettered wounds between us,
my tongue is parchment glue,
a seal on every debt,
I walk along the avenue,
don't know where I’m from,
tired of cigarettes,
beneath this heavy boulder,
say it isn’t true
in houses that we’ve left,
squabbling over what to do,
how our world crumbles,
in gardens of the West,
on each night wind a number,
arms to hold me yet ?

Her smile makes you prance,
no fear of being caught,
lubin for your smart chat,
take all the chaff,
show them ‘round the course,
smoke and act daft,
what others have found,
singing myself hoarse,
is a lack of balance,
I just drink and dance,
but you make me worse,
with your sparky flowers,
you hold hands and ask,
is this what we're taught,
love’s such a gas,
then why forget the past,
you know about horses,
how to turn them out,
why not take a chance,
draw a toil of water,
rock me with a cadence,
if it’s such a laugh ?

A cold wind blows,
it stokes a fear,
suddenly in the shining snow,
pearl doves arch above,
nothing else comes near,
their blazing breasts of love,
shimmer on my work clothes,
my smile is not dear,
there are no bad tones,
singing along my weather front,
even if I do like beer,
fly to those who give,
their vision blown,
I need to be gone,
a lifetime left to moan,
I have the will to shove,
that barrel of heartless cheer,
somewhere down the road,
I wear lipstick now you know,
love these killer years,
a woman from stern to bow,
let me make it clear.

Who needs a shrink,
when a lover somehow,
always wants a drink,
one day he might stroll,
in the village like a clown,
others times rotten lie low,
I know what they think,
he’ll always miss the furrow,
his head down a sink,
a display all his own,
show them what he’s sown,
outrage now he’s gone,
I teeter on the brink,
a whole investment blown,
work and strain and stink,
who will want me now,
face like an ice rink,
heavy as a cow,
my politics dull pink,
sweat shines on my brow,
get away don’t think,
I sail above the scarecrows.

Hera
My star is coming home,
a wonder of the sky,
in shelters you lie prone,
why whisper about love,
rolling in a death vice,
face ravaged by the moon,
saints can show their bones,
a poem betrays your cry,
you can’t afford to moan,
doves in sunlight search above,
a lifetime of men’s sighs,
I fly to those who give,
fresh linen and Eau de Cologne,
makes me wonder why,
blossoms of my red choke,
is not disguised for pearls,
money only lies,
just get through this shift,
try to find a loan,
I’ll dance like on wire,
find a road instead of mist,
before I say goodbye.

Eileen
I'm not your latest grip,
nor big sea,
the yellow light hid,
you ask about my lovers,
with all their surly needs,
they don’t have my number,
what I sow to live,
to break from the greedy,
fashion my limits,
find a palace of wonder,
witness the creed,
like my high heeled mother,
red stones and pieces of drift,
knowing is enough to bleed,
it’s all within my gift,
enslave or encumber,
a lifetime near Innisfree,
the smells of sweet summer,
you make me sound limpid,
by title or deed,
a matchstick in a river,
there's much more to me.

Face down terrible claims,
no star can refuse,
this outrageous fame,
you who wonder why,
lordly canons of virtue,
always want to make me cry,
this is no man’s game,
TV's blare fake news,
chase me through my days,
spin the constant lie,
let them sing the blues,
for all their crass disguise,
hardships on the way,
nothing here to rue,
catch them on the make,
only fools will die,
beyond the swollen Ohio,
look them in the eye,
always meet their gaze,
act like Scooby Doo,
I’m tired of catching planes,
heavy with some truth.

Take him by the horns,
it's not a place of ease,
pray for all you know,
we’re not defined by flaws,
or other things you dream,
scream just because,
your love’s on the floor,
blazing eyes believe,
bells roll out the score,
make me love him more,
don’t pretend it’s free,
keep within the law,
if you have to go,
it's all right with me,
just don’t slam the door,
hope’s all we call upon,
always meant to be,
in life’s constant roar,
think of Tripoli,
places you can’t cheat,
but with this chameleon,
who needs the sea?

Anya
Since you've been away,
we don't know what to do,
but each night pray,
break the wall of stone,
say it’s right for you,
everyone hates you gone,
doesn’t have to be this way,
hear you sing of love,
we’ve nothing more to say,
said you had to go,
stamp out the fool,
head a bag of marbles,
our lives turn to grey,
drink will be our ruin,
all the eaten cake,
consumed within your roam,
you've little need of truth,
except that in your womb,
hear your song of praise,
see the creep of moon,
new horizons are great,
let us sing their due.

You’ll pay a heavy score,
almond eyes ruined,
when love turns raw,
if you feel my bones,
wilt like a sinking broom,
you’ll know what you've done,
life’s gone to the maw,
wheeled around and spewed,
forget that law,
why waste away at home,
only fools pay dues,
scatter the freeway cones,
define me as your tort,
other stuff you blew,
don't scream because,
hard traces to your tone,
a warrior out of tune,
some forgotten draw,
you know you’ll get caught,
drain winter into June,
all the stuff you swore,
promising the moon.
Liv
Water runs softly,
there's a need for grace,
to bathe my swollen feet,
restrained in my moans,
I settle for this place,
heart against bone,
in these gardens of gethsemane,
blown here by the rain,
ring of bells within me,
alone at this grotto,
are my words to say,
how can we atone,
for want of testimony,
offered me this day,
their silver derisory,
stupid faces look on,
brown thorns and useless games,
a life not my own,
I want to receive,
to throw away the cross,
all that’s held for me,
sunshine on my face.
