What it means to cry,
within a screaming gale,
no use trying to lie,
cold within your bones,
you don't need a trial,
to find yourself alone,
studying a time,
when all your efforts fail,
your only cut is style,
how d0 you cope,
love always seem to fail,
empty clothes shroud your home,
flip a coin see the sky,
go and find some sail,
head high leave this way,
refuse wine from broken cones,
abandon desolate mail,
throw stones at your ghosts,
laughter lights the trail.

In the spring light,
I open the door,
look for the other side,
it's cold for the season,
sons and daughters,
look to their freedom,
out on the Neap tide,
it’s illusory of course,
they ask me why,
I’ve brought them to see,
sunshine over the port,
where we used to live,
without a dime,
as if we’d been caught,
in some policy drive,
they believe,
i’m joking that’s all,
just a conspiracy,
but each walk of life,
ends overwrought,
maybe only strife,
tells us the score.
Jane
On these long flights,
side by side for harmony,
we act like cool socialites,
why take a train,
or a boat on the sea,
this way there's no strain,
Oh we're so right,
who needs reason,
bags melt into the night,
it's fun being away,
don't ever concretely,
inquire about pain,
our long silent fight,
when morning stands scrutiny,
casts a cold cabin light,
this horizon so bright,
claims a sun all seeing,
brings hopes of eternity,
why? .

Each year makes me a liar,
will anyone see,
the roots between my hair,
sometimes just a little shove,
makes the heavens scream,
even if its hard to hum,
terribly hard chairs,
won’t make it seem,
you accommodate me there,
I dress with a shrug,
what about my teeth,
left shining on the rug,
act like I don't care,
scrubbed sparkling clean,
I sail through the air,
open like a new bud,
Spring rescues everything,
every night a tidal flood,
it's only fair,
when evening turns green,
love happens when you dare,
age is just a dream.

When you start to say,
I like to dance alone,
please give me a break,
sit here by the fire,
don't go wittering on,
you’re not a player,
not a second to waste,
it's lonely on stones,
marry me at once,
we’ll listen to the wire,
the bed’s long gone,
to calm all desires,
grant me this day,
not long silent groans,
followed by hoorays,
we are not Sapphires,
who ever atone,
drawn to the pyre,
we're coming home.

Who will break the news,
struggling to escape,
life without a curfew,
no horizon's bright,
if you have to strain,
know you're always right,
don’t know what to do,
frightened of the waves,
feelings that you lose,
it’s nearly time,
hear a donkey bray,
you sit by the fire,
before the morning dew,
tears seep away,
no one can reach you,
C’mon Gracie try,
people pine for your days,
long silent nights,
golden moment’s true,
love will find a way,
mist rises from the roof,
it’ll all be OK.

You used to be fine,
to drink for fun,
laugh an estuary wide,
no need for tea,
humour lachrymose,
jokes your repartee,
now that you find,
hearing water run,
you need mor time,
if rain starts to cease,
stuff carries on,
depend on that certainty,
speak when it’s right,
never shout and jump,
what keeps for a while,
voyage to the deep,
hide it from the sun,
don’t lose your dreams,
where is the line,
seeking love that runs,
mountains to climb,
before coming home?

Take the love you know,
Roll it on the rides,
sail it like a boat,
drained by winter's blues,
before you pass on by,
Spring is here for you,
caught on the Cyclone,
you like the left outside,
nowhere else to go,
you will make it through,
a heart needs to fly,
takes comfort in the Brew,
it seeps through your bones,
wind rides out at night,
it doesn’t make you cold,
all we ever lose,
is waiting for the tide,
cast another part of you,
you will always show,
the look of lover’s smile,
never left alone,
drinking holy wine.

Delaney
Look up as you go,
try to keep kind,
leave what you can throw,
stars show you the way,
a cold white light,
gone from me again,
a constant need for loans,
you walk the miles,
smile what you don't own,
there’ll be no claims,
when you’re alive,
you know how to save,
through broken windows,
your face shines,
shoulders hunched to the road,
future days,
we’ll sit out the fire,
back home to stay,
my lovely child

Do you know,
what people feel,
the ice in their bones,
that splintered smile,
nailed to the promontory,
catches all your crooked life,
don’t have to show,
provide a door key,
when your cigarette glows,
you’d rob a child,
in mountain streams,
to get yourself a wife,
who are you to bestow,
what others dream,
all stuff you’ve blown,
say it'll be right,
spin everything on a throw,
your lies a river wide,
now you have to go.

This is not the way,
to let me know,
what can open the gate,
somethings missing,
but you don’t follow,
even tho'you’re listening,
thoughts run like the Spey,
same when the wind blows,
Spring's come around again.
other times you’re whistling,
eyes bright as a crow,
now I feel like kissing,
you make the ground sway,
like i'm being towed,
the shore a tidal wave,
rub together my mittens,
laugh to hear your news,
sea around us glistening,
mist rises on the dunes.

Please look this way,
but not at the ruins,
hung out like purple drapes,
a tired waiting game,
I always play it cool,
but dream of the day,
whatever it takes,
to drink wine at noon,
you to remain,
I can’t explain,
there are no rules,
that keeps me this way,
seeping in the shade,
dreaming of you,
my thoughts drip like rain,
are you made of clay,
I howl at some moon,
hope lets me celebrate,
come back soon.

Zena
I wonder if she's right,
to dream of the sea,
dancing in the light,
she’ll splash and parade,
make faces at calumny,
her soul works this way,
shrouds of her delight,
shake out release,
time is her lightning,
her eyes bear the fray,
to denounce all reason,
she wants away,
she’ll go to the wire,
before such entreaty,
is tossed on the fire,
carries no dismay,
is done with feelings,
what are they anyway,
says she loves me.

Songs are only half true,
when you smell the Limes,
on a windblown avenue,
invent what you don’t know,
forget the tunes that bind,
feel them in your bones,
try to stay aloof,
sing about what’s right,
give no one a clue,
you’re not alone,
these desolate nights,
let others bellow,
don’t rage and argue,
it’s not a crime,
wood fire will warm you,
when the kids phone,
in the cold evening light,
tell them to keep going,
just be kind.

Who knows if she's right,
even when she's skimming,
water, sky, sunlight,
like the river off the banks,
her smile arrives winning,
where my lonely heart shrank,
she never leaves a family’s side,
but knows others will follow,
did someone make her cry,
her lungs are like a tank,
she understands my limits,
laughs at the pale shanks,
next to me like a bride,
her lips twist for filleting,
why constant why,
tobacco blonde full of lies,
a lover who goes swimming,
many a moonlit night,
she dances in the tide,
her fame is just beginning,
nails me with that smile,
fresh, alive, winning.

Vienna
The sun rises in steam,
cars fill up their lanes,
this won't wait 'till evening,
beyond me the morning sky,
still needs to frame,
all that I carry inside,
a rush down the freeway,
coffee tastes the same,
I need a good reason,
so I wait in line,
it matters what you say,
not go off this time,
my dawn novena,
perches like a hurricane,
bones anchored by heat,
I know what’s not fine,
in between times pray,
ask for fake red wine,
bars bring a sweetness,
do I have to say again,
it’s not my swollen feet,
that carry your name.

Don't turn away silent,
we’ll go home again,
maybe in a better time,
do what we can for now,
it won’t bring us shame,
rivers flow on their own,
laugh in warmer climes,
no one here’s to blame,
part of me is dying,
beyond this war zone,
the shifting hand of fame,
will let us set moving,
return us on the tide,
all you need to say,
keep wrapped up inside,
if promises get broken,
and spirits dance in flames,
bring me little tokens,
please just laugh the same.

Who can ever say,
we’ll toast our bones,
when we're back to stay,
if the picture's not bright,
we can cry but won’t,
sometimes home’s not kind,
thoughts that are sprayed,
where we come from,
are not often on display,
like this harvest light,
with hardly a sound,
there is no gentle sky,
maybe we'll take a train,
like a winter's stove,
warms us to dream,
a horizon blind,
we’ll navigate alone,
seeking what’s right,
happy on our ground.

Love holds the door ajar,
my hair gleams and shines,
I haven’t travelled very far,
no need to suffer fools,
watch trees form into line,
listen to their news,
they talk about my Da,
say he lives for wine,
lonely as a shooting star,
the money he spooled,
Ma’s inheritance by right,
scattered on women, drink, Pool,
he needs another car,
to give our mother rides,
no room here for scars,
play by the rules,
forget the hurt inside,
it’s another part of you,
in the red dawn rise.

My mind is unfazed,
sheltered from the wind,
clear as cellophane,
best not to moan,
burn or rescind,
know we’re just loaned,
jump the right trains,
roll over the land,
luck always finds me,
in worn-out clothes,
I’ll enjoy the trip,
not yet on the bones,
make a step change,
write a thousand lists,
find a lover to trade,
when someone moans,
steer clear of his lips,
move out of that zone,
unchained to these days,
my heart leaps and skips,
says isn’t life great,
wears a huge grin.

Go on then be silent,
you're only skin and bone,
who am I to license,
censor what you say,
the only song I own,
sung on this sunlit highway,
a taste that asks why,
penetrates my soul,
I float along lighter,
are you one to state,
the only pain is home,
look at my face,
this shell of my silence,
has no need to groan,
strung out on quietness,
sing as you pray,
don’t try to console,
no one makes your day,
calls upon you to brighten,
all you don't know,
what makes me frightened,
is ending up alone.

If it's not too late,
to let them know,
what opens your gate,
somethings missing,
but you don’t follow,
even when you’re listening,
thoughts muddy as the Spey,
same when the wind blows,
winter’s gone again.
other times you’re kidding,
get out now and sow,
earth feels like it’s kissing,
it makes you sway,
to walk on battered bones,
the ground a tidal wave,
stroll amongst the bitterns,
laughing at their boom,
trees around them glistening,
calm as the hills.

No one deceives a fool,
without some pain,
knowing what they lose,
scrubbed by fire,
you know what to do,
including bold desire,
even tempted by the few,
in fallow lands ornate,
not much left to choose,
like a bird on a wire,
it's hard to sustain,
who else is for hire,
those you see through,
watch their childish gains,
graveyards tell the truth,
the land might ask why,
you live without stain,
forget that patch of sky,
the seeker of good news,
always tramps the lanes,
some things forever true,
in the morning rain.

Meeting in a warm cafe',
sorry outreach of worn nights,
sip warm tea and cakes,
you don’t want to hesitate,
before this coming fight,
how you’ve missed again,
over there is Lafferty,
smoking his Marlborough lights,
could make a girl happy,
he never studies the times,
says that life’s a trial,
always tries to find a way,
all your smiles are fake,
when I let loose a sigh,
just see you on the make,
why not take a train,
flip a coin see the sky,
can’t be worse than jail,
you don’t even try.

She says from on high,
is that the sea,
don’t you wonder why,
if it's all true,
she’s as bad as me,
eyes blink like jewels,
diamond suns burn bright,
with hopes of eternity,
is life really so tight,
then we’re screwed,
she arches breezily,
let’s sleep till noon,
we’ll sail the sky,
nothing else beats scrutiny,
on cold Candlemas light,
we're so sad and cool,
who expects sympathy,
when we nod like fools,
on these long flights,

Her manner’s always cool,
many a life she’s known,
wish it were yours too,
never crashing like the sea,
an artist bright unknown,
she always stays clean,
no danger of my muse,
creative but never swallowed,
being taken for a fool,
lives easy on our street,
doesn’t pray for calm,
will always lend her keys,
lipstick lemon blue,
her skin is golden brown,
she says its up to you,
maybe sees a loving need,
for those who might drown,
it brings no sense of ease,
take any path you own.

You stretch out sunny days,
smile an absent stream,
now you're on your way,
don’t bring bad news,
like a losing team,
say you know what to do,
lying in the rain,
by the Chelsea quay,
kills me to see you again,
there’s a spirit in you,
that’s hard to please,
dancing parish of broken rules,
I’ll work and save,
whatever the need,
whenever your ship sails ,
the lovers you took,
made you dream,
now you're just cool,
but something’s missing.

Janice
If you sing of hope,
without worry to the waves,
don’t need to tie ropes,
always let loose,
sing the only way,
nothing’s there to lose,
you're not such a dope,
songs will show the way,
they just soften the blows,
when you get the blues,
let others stand and shake,
one voice you own is true,
never wonder how you'll cope,
always have your say,
face them all don’t slope,
separate out what’s new,
from distant tides or sail,
always bring the new,
it’s what makes you great.
