Zadie
A worn-out empty feeling,
hot kitchens bad aches,
something's leaking,
he brings me the news,
with his doctor’s face,
seems he knows the truth,
but I long for the sea,
nothing makes me fazed,
more than a bad dream,
looking for something new,
I will fky away,
unshackle those Delta Blues,
show it on the street,
how I'll work and save,
more to me than belief,
won't be left in perdue,
falling like the rain,
dance down broken avenues,
nothing sends me keening,
I'll be born again,
laughter fills my being,
prancing sunny days.

Yana
What it is to fly,
within a screaming gale,
no use trying to tie,
down on my bones,
I never look for fame,
wonder at myself alone,
studying a time,
when everything fails,
I search for style,
it's hard to atone,
when sometimes there's shame,
contrition drags us home,
flip a coin study sky,
talk of finding sail,
I always enjoy a cry,
sip wine from broken cones,
discard desolate mail,
throw stones at our ghosts,
nothing's worse than jail,
time forsakes the while,
catch us on the trail,
how brightly we smile.

Xolani
I dream of his class,
silken war torn,
listening to him gasp,
struggling without scorn,
broken unsought,
makes me feel reborn,
removing the traps,
dancing on thorns,
he’s a modern-day iconoclast,
what have I caught,
riding this storm,
useless dime a penny thoughts,
you say it overlaps,
now that he's gone,
hiding under Burlap,
at the church next door,
I'll remove his form,
love hits the floor,
he broke his fast,
I fed him corn,
now I’m aghast,
shaking unsure.

Out by the long lights,
side by side in harmony,
we are cool as anthracite,
why take a train,
or sail for the lee,
when you can jump a plane,
so far we're all right,
who needs reason,
we act like socialites,
it's fun being away,
we don't ever concretely,
inquire about pain,
a cruel silent night,
doesn’t stand scrutiny,
blue dawn can’t buy,
our horizon’s frayed,
diamond sun's all-seeing,
it pierces the strain,
we want to be free,
we say from on high,
below us the sea,
don’t ask me why?

My eyes try to fix a place,
where we just carry on,
a price one has to pay,
who cares for the cones,
who rise like birds on Babylon,
beyond western pay phones,
when you see my face,
the silver rings of ruin,
all will all become plain,
a time to stay alone,
wolves howl at the moon,
don't like being at home,
maybe I'll take a train,
find last winter's love,
sail around Biscay,
who knows where I’ll go,
a sojourn of broken rungs,
heavy as a stone,
when you kindle flame,
bleach hair and use a comb,
who can ever really say,
where we come from ?

That’s behind you now,
it's over no more duels,
a breeze makes you scowl,
on golden sand you dream,
all that hides in blue,
scrubbed gently by the sea,
it's easy to be thrown,
what you've been through,
why not get brown,
home swells with yellow leaves,
they carry all the news,
just let me be,
what you can't undo,
or let your tongue refuse,
is beginnings of a prelude,
why not wax and seal,
offer them your perfume,
put them on the wheel,
concoct some faithful tale,
where everything is good,
no one lets you down,
no one makes you lose.

Who can resist,
my diminished fame,
whatever crumbles in the mist,
hidden by dunes and scree,
realms of useless probate,
gather at my feet,
beware of those you kiss,
please don’t turn and say,
I am being a realist,
this quayside ticks with heat,
sunshine cuts a million shapes,
my faraway look all seeing,
let everything go amiss,
I say again,
rage won't absolve us,
everything we see,
we'll see again,
include our vaulting envy,
uncertain misfits,
play their games,
dreams lost in wickedness,
I beg for my name.

You cross to the lee,
things are never the same,
salt drifts on the breeze,
danger is in your eyes,
fame is in your gait,
has it brought another spy,
perfume from last night’s heat,
bourne on gentle waves,
love beckons at your feet,
how you hold the line,
you cannot say,
even if you tell a lie,
a prayer outside the sacristy,
bright jewel for your ways,
silk on a darkened sea,
beyond the burning pyre,
someone chants your name,
sandalwood rises,
truth is never easy,
essence of turbulent days,
chained to your odyssey,
you dance to flames.

Rosalie
A painter of religious scenes,
she dabs another frame,
stands quiet without relief,
regards the thing she's honed,
tired of other games,
doubts she's ever alone,
in yellow nights of dreams,
even when she's far away,
nothing is what it seems,
in many ways she's prone,
looks lost without a name,
the work is just her own,
insight lets her see,
painting's like the mail,
it arrives from history,
the pull of other thrones,
never lets her reign,
serene when she's gone,
work is her Gethsamane,
wakes and eyes the day,
another stroke for liberty,
can be no other way.

Love holds the door ajar,
hair falls to my knees,
it doesnt go very far,
you sit around a Pool,
wind bends in the trees,
who needs this news,
they ask about your Da,
just another wheeze,
lonely as a shooting star,
the money he tooled,
and didnt show much mercy,
punishing other fools,
home's another carp,
furnished by mother's cries,
a place of stolen parts,
including you, you fool,
forget the hurt he seized,
there's another you,
that sits across the bar,
regards the evening sea,
wish it could be more,
love let's me dream.
Penny
An unread poem on my knees,
you demand to see the child,
but what lies in between,
you always think you know,
a fury in your smile,
pain like a broken bone,
am I not allowed some ease,
do you ignore the signs,
believe your perfect belief,
even if it's not true,
a power beyond my sight,
why always claim the virtue,
wrap prayers around your rosary,
whispered dry at night,
throw them back at me,
terms you want to accrue,
beyond heaven's insight,
your lawyers stick like glue,
before asking the judiciary,
to take the precious mite,
where is love in this,
would you have me die?

Don't let some doom crew,
make it seem,
you always sing the Blues,
cold weather brings them on,
floats them on the breeze,
they always find a home,
if the wind rocks cruel,
they'll blow on your dreams,
find ways for you to lose,
stay here my lovely one,
laugh beside a swollen sea,
nothing beats what’s gone,
the dark days of feud,
make them just history,
you’ll beat any curfew,
when fields turn brown,
remain here alongside me,
our love is a marathon,
dance the way you do,
escaping their screams,
keep the chosen few,
believe what you believe.

Fear hollows out my night,
makes me summon ancient flame,
waits for lamps to light,
when I'm most shot through,
you’ll hear me straight,
change is my due,
a dream of life outside,
special moments to play,
drink a little wine,
there are no avenues,
I won’t walk again,
you'll never pass through,
laugh in a better clime,
no one else to blame,
part of me dying,
you won't shine my shoes,
of all the pieces today,
my tide will turn blue,
beside an early sunrise,
you can't supply what's great,
don't look away in fright,
I won't come back again
Maya
Say it’s time to leave,
don't really want to go,
if you must believe,
now just want away,
to live or die alone,
dig my own grave,
our love is bittersweet,
no real need for home,
kids house dog big dreams,
shifted silence of your company,
your dance on moonlit stones,
I want to stay pretty,
sing along and pray,
the only song I own,
before you jump the gate,
can you hear me scream,
locked to an iron stove,
like the caves of Thebes,
please don't push me,
I only weigh eight stone,
who are you to grieve,
when I go to Rome ?

It's been a while,
so there you go,
waited on you like a child,
when donkeys start to bray,
or the cock crows,
you always fade away,
no need to find,
what you never owned,
could search for miles,
stars might show the way,
frozen in your clothes,
for all you've gained,
say you don't mind,
it's just another show,
freshens up the time,
will you stay a while,
wrapped up in the snow,
have you got the style,
sit by a fire,
don’t worry or scold,
try to stay kind,
why don't you know ?

You like sugared tea,
my tears are lachrymose,
your jokes not for me,
once it might have been,
suppose you atone,
wind turns in the chimneys,
lets replace uncertainty,
ride out the blow,
Oh we'll have to see,
nail your wandering feet,
the moon makes to roam,
lights pathways you leave,
who needs the sea
tides are very close,
more faithful than your being,
should I bother to stitch,
the hung up clothes ,
now I've ceased believing,
kids are still at home,
I'll fix a drink alone,
change into bright clothes,
make some calls by phone.

Helen
Your kisses leave me,
crying on the train,
bad tongues raised in family,
your shocked views,
run dread across my face,
more jelly for the blues,
who knows what to believe,
but a growing grain,
brings blessed relief,
who'll protects this crew,
from the orphanage gates,
do they hear the truth,
a swollen relief,
a stillborn fate,
a tiny star across the sea,
you can't see how cruel,
life can be,
before sunrise looms,
your tears won't reach,
me going away,
guilt riddles my dreams,
hope for better days.

Don't say get a grip,
when someone fails below,
let another moment slip,
I need strength to pray,
sooth my chromes,
my quest to keep awake,
stowaways have surly lips,
betrayed by wretched homes,
others simply quip,
tired jokes and life dismayed,
on 49 different time zones,
lies in everything they say,
they make my eyes dip,
consumption in their bones,
pays to take another nip,
who knows how I'll sleep,
try to act grown,
ask faith take a leap,
wonder who'll end this trip,
will the wind moan,
nail me to a coffin ship,
hunger in our soul.

Is this the place,
to ask the reason why,
love's gone lame,
hazed by loss and flow,
I beat out my time,
have nowhere else to go,
soaked by gin and fame,
desolate in my cry,
I'd do it all again,
what I need to know,
you don't beseech the sky,
ask for a one-time show,
will youjump the rail,
scale a mountainside,
to see me happy again,
my lips no longer glow,
surrounded by your lies,
leave me in a furrow,
no easy way to fake,
what hurts deep inside,
spin me on my grave,
eyes open wide.

Do you think I'm beat,
perhaps with a common air,
you can rescue everything,
if love’s the game,
heaven’s a place to share,
with my good name,
try my depths of need,
relinquish taking care,
it's not easy being me,
getting here’s insane,
never short of treasure,
astride the shipping lanes,
I know how to keep,
a wooden face on stairs,
bars are my sole conceit,
everyone I tame,
can usually find me there,
even without chains,
will anyone see,
the gaps between my shirt,
eyes lit like kerosene,
my breath elsewhere?

Is this how you imitiate,
your inventive best,
when you twist and shake,
open every door,
to level your fences,
wake up sore,
fuelled by what you make,
time like all the rest,
doesn't hesitate,
fools sing for applause,
faith brings a test,
two and two is more,
each nights cool probate,
scatters your innocence,
costs you to conflate,
the worthless poor,
who ask for your presence,
like dust on the floor,
in your search for gain,
is each task tended,
don’t send them away,
you'll need friends.

Cherie
Is water in your blood,
in this house of whispers,
does it do any good,
places you might claim,
don't need a chorus,
blossom along the freeway,
Oh you're misunderstood,
not for you my bonus,
be prepared for trouble,
hire another brain,
tunnel what time insists,
laughter follows pain,
maybe you need a tug,
sail away without a ship,
when your dreams are dust,
search for love again,
tread the middle distance,
never bow to shame.
balance on the tidal flood,
ride above the fuss,
go beyond the crumbs,
plenty is in all of us.

You'll pay a heavy score,
my face is savage blue,
love is swollen raw,
without a sense of ease,
am always in your Queue,
you never do say please,
don't outline some shore,
sitting in the gloom,
a footfall for your cause,
often when we meet,
no one hears good news,
someone sometimes screams,
I knock on lonely doors,
turn my life askew,
sweating furious pause,
why shout and swear at me,
spitting out your spume,
only a fool would heed,
as you rage and roar,
you'll never be my glue,
I have other mores,
am already over you.

Forget these clowns,
who come to woo you,
so many without a plan,
as loud as your woes,
ships blow their hooters,
songs sing of home,
not what's in your gown,
that makes them swoon,
it goes beyond your tan,
you don't need a throne,
in bars where they're shoeless,
you'd rather be gone,
nothing’s ever by chance,
your eyes are reduced,
everything comes to pass,
barefoot you raise a glass,
shameless eyes on view,
face your countenance,
strange these ocean towns,
these faded boozers,
no sign of your crown,
only faces and losers.

Zina
Will you let me know,
how others feel,
if it's in your bones,
my jilted smile's strange,
hangs like mist on trees,
they see it every day,
take your time right now,
forget my nights of reels,
the river always flows,
embrace the pouring rain,
laugh in mountain streams,
I sing in hopes of praise,
you've nothing to bestow,
free from crazy schemes,
life is our picture show,
too long to be a saint,
living without a dream,
face down dread uncertainty,
what you did was wrong,
but I see how you've been,
replace it with a song,
you can join my team.

Bellow at dreams betrayed,
conceal bitter unholy things,
take them to your grave,
you cant afford the Blues,
where everything just sinks,
heavy notes end on cue,
what a sound they make,
a curdled love to everything,
who will know your fate,
smoke cigarettes in the dunes,
when called upon to prate,
life is just a hula-hoop,
it rolls around your days,
you really want to fling,
salt at heartaches far away,
but here's someone brand new,
laughs at toys that ring,
knows what isn't true,
don’t gamble all and say,
love to me is nothing,
you can’t cheat the age,
find a place to sing.

Willa
I still hear me Da,
laughing like a foghorn,
long ago seems so far,
happy he's not scarred,
or left forlorn.
I start the car,
when he stamps the tar,
he's like a newborn,
a fallen star,
I turn the key off,
he looks war-torn,
what about me Ma,
like he's left the ark,
he’s not even sure,
where he's from,
I can’t find a chart,
to tell me the score',
it’s gone too far,
a trip to the park,
an old shirt he’s worn,
things fall apart,
love has no form.

Verity
I hope to keep trouble at bay,
any life requires,
problems just look away,
they'll pester me for loans,
your eyes seek the tide,
tell them we're gone,
stumble in the haze,
dampen all desire,
fools are easy or brave,
scared to your bones,
they won’t call you a liar,
or chase us with guns,
ride the blue waves,
like a cold fish knife,
love is our only gain,
why don't you 'phone,
I dance among candlelit signs,
don't go on your own,
is this what you crave,
me turning up for hire,
pine needles and hay,
a soul on fire?

Ulyssa
It's quiet here now,
after fifty years of grief,
my face smooth as stone,
can still see the cave,
where they let me bleed,
thank God I'm saved,
my body under snow,
taken back to the sea,
rocking on the tidal flow,
give me this grace,
grant such serenity,
attend all my feast days,
geese with barren tones,
sail skies as they freeze,
time on their shoulder,
they honk on their way,
late for the season,
I'm just the same,
in the clean blue dawn,
stripped like a tree,
in my hands is a rose,
the old loving need.
