If trouble's in your blood,
in this house of whispers,
who says it does no good,
places you can name,
don't need a chorus,
to repeat all that shame,
times they say you should,
be prepared for this,
or go nuts,
they'll find another Cain,
simply do what they insist,
knowledge is sometimes crazy,
maybe you feel a tug,
going away without a ship,
rain will crack like dust,
now you're born again,
walk the middle distance,
the Ocean is your frame,
why make a fuss,
or carry yellow lists,
you can't beat their diagnosis,
just dance among the bits

How little we levitate,
to our inventive best,
we sneer, berate,
open every door,
who can mend our fences,
and not get bored,
shattered we begin to slake,
drink like all the rest,
don't stop or hesitate,
fools sing forever more,
bring us to the test,
ask what's the score,
the night's cool probate,
resides at rest,
no matter what toil it takes,
forbidden troubadours,
demand our presence,
leave us forlorn,
but twist and shake,
at the Cask or blend,
this beats the pain,
my good friends.

Is this really the place,
to start to cry,
when even love's ashamed,
ways around you show,
the beat of your time,
there's nowhere else to go,
soaked on the ocean main,
the desolate airlines you fly,
you never try to calculate,
what you need to know,
no longer sails the sky,
wooden box or lonely blow,
you once jumped bail,
county lines safe to climb,
beyond the spike of jail,
your lips can't atone,
news to my constant lies,
or see a heart grow cold,
it's not easy to explain,
what's going on inside,
seeing pain across your face,
your eyes full of why?

I'm forever beat,
even with a common air,
but hope rescues everything,
when I need love,
heaven is a place to share,
sometimes with a little shove,
in debt gone to seed,
have a go at taking care,
it's not easy being free,
get dressed feel the tug,
never short of prayer,
a signal to up above,
I know how to keep,
a wooden house and chair,
drink is my sole conceit,
somewhere I can dream,
terrible faces stamp on stairs,
lit up like kerosene,
can everyone see,
the gaps between my hair,
do I need new teeth,
a smile gets you anywhere

They tell me get a grip,
strangers grasp me from below,
they can really give some lip,
I don't need drugs to pray,
sooth my bones,
find the need to get away,
stowaways make surly trips,
manacled wretched clones,
others take a coin and flip,
hollow jokes and spirits fray,
down unforgiving zones,
a lie in everything they say,
they make your spirits dip,
like alcoholic dojos,
with another 'script,
don't ask me how I sleep,
or even want to atone,
when faith makes a leap,
you wonder why I slip,
for every childhood groan,
on my coffin ship,
I sail away for home.

You like strong tea,
tears lachrymose,
to fill up the sea,
never one to atone,
you let yourself go ,
take out the thorns,
jokes your repartee,
might have once been so,
your head starts to ease,
replace time with certainty,
the moon fills your dome,
you'll always have needs,
the scorn they pour down,
why beat that drum,
where is your home,
you're not like a fiddly,
or one to roam,
just want to believe,
the kids that have gone,
their mother alone,
whisky a scouring stone,
when they all leave,
do you mop your brow,
walk to the lavatory,
admit that you're wrong

It's been a while,
but there you go,
you're no longer a child,
when women start to pray,
or when the cock crows,
you'll have your say,
no need to find,
what you already own,
deep in your smile,
a star shows the way,
frozen in your bones,
there are not many trains,
say you don't mind,
you'd rather come alone,
whatever the time,
stay here a while,
wrapped against the snow,
you have great style,
we sit by a fire,
listening to the blow,
your eyes look wild,
lost in your soul.
