Emily
She has some spark,
her lovely face lights,
early as the lark,
she hankers for love,
most of her nights,
doesn’t worry what's above,
in a supermarket car park,
they ask her why,
she hangs around bars,
says we all need a crust,
black suits her fine,
she doesn’t drink doubles,
never walks far,
to gossip is a crime,
each step another car,
works without gloves,
unlike other times,
Okay, when it's good,
but never a chart,
to show us what's right,
she’ll give it some thought,
maybe next time.

Carthy
I stand by her grave,
where praise be,
I hope to be saved,
my eyes like thunder,
wine dark like the sea,
it makes me shudder,
from the blue Nave,
stooped in the lee,
she had nothing left,
here and there a cluster,
of poplar trees,
they neither wave nor linger,
my voice starts to break,
it's late for the season,
geese fly away,
her face is the wonder,
happy laughing sweet,
that I tore asunder,
it's quiet in this place,
my place of need,
I ask for the space,
left open for me.

You who burn the tar,
do not bring good news,
even in your car,
a trip on your radio,
brings sweeties for a few,
love never eats alone,
you won't cross the arc,
but make your excuses,
right from the start,
it takes a heart of stone,
to ignore my ju ju,
the way things go,
and this has gone too far,
lipstick, the jeans I use,
no way am I your tart,
splutter down the ‘phone,
act like a distant mark,
is this your last fandango,
I smoke a Lucky Star,
smell summer’s sweet perfume,
you who are falling apart,
with your lousy tunes

Is it peace or fame,
a bird on the wire,
that you rage against,
shuffling out the gloom,
chanting to the wind,
no one flies to you,
many come this way,
they pester you for hire,
ask and ask again,
tell them what to do,
your face dire,
what’s forever blue,
an offering to the naysay,
a burnt-out tyre,
this is all you give,
always someone's due,
their wretched desire,
nothing else of virtue,
the miracle they crave,
is not what you desire,
betrayed by brains,
you play with fire

I'll gamble it all away,
don't care what you do,
you can't stop this age,
in winter's iron maw,
there is no Neptune,
just a shallow thaw,
watch ships in the bay,
work is just a ruse,
to salt away our rage,
everyone's a whore,
sad song's ring on cue,
what a cache they hoard,
smoke Camels in the rain,
every trick in use,
it’s all such a game,
love comes tied with cord,
I don’t really hate you,
why make me roar,
this generation’s betrayed,
TV reveals bitter news,
we could fill our grave,
with all their shoddy goods.

My song is dead good mojo,
It may be flawed,
but I know the score,
my love’s like a flea,
whoever takes the tour,
always lands on me,
join this band of lonely,
a lender of last resort,
I won't leave you alone,
each tune a jumping bean,
brings you back for more,
don’t you dig this scene,
dance in my zone,
like you did before,
our time is never done,
it dances on the sea,
your hair shines the floor,
say hello to sweet dreams,
I will smooth your bones,
bring peace to the poor,
temper your groans,
sooth every sore.

You ask me what's new,
never one to help the poor,
always smart on cue,
you won’t say please,
confined to any floor,
no sense of ease,
wherever there’s a queue,
you’ll work that door,
bust any curfew,
bad guys on the street,
never make you pause,
when you hear the screams,
of a life detenue,
handing out the chores,
such stories make you Blue,
who knows where you've been,
with all your gorgeous whores,
you will never need,
to be someone’s glue,
drinking like some Commodore,
your head full of tunes,
working out the score.
