Love holds the door ajar,
my hair falls down unkind,
nowhere gets me very far,
I sit on a high stool,
drink a little wine,
who needs more bad news,
you ask about my Ma,
Oh she’s fine,
wades a little through tar,
the money blew,
in a poor easy light,
how many other fools,
cruise in her fast car,
knock around her lies,
no wonder I’m scarred,
is there something cool,
to crush the hurt inside,
find that other part of you,
maybe it’s from afar,
that sees each morning rise,
constant as the northern star,
I count my time.

A painter of religious scenes,
she dabs the yellow glaze,
a thirty-year-old seraphim,
views the work that's honed,
never wise in this game,
doubts she's ever alone,
in great nights of dreams,
even when just the same,
it's not what it seems,
the canvas lets her roam,
a stretch of wooden nails,
in many ways she's gone,
to places she’s never been,
lost without a name,
a matchstick in the sea,
the work is not her own,
the pull of certain days,
like some hurricane zone,
her body aches without relief,
deep sunk eyes are crazed,
her mind is never easy,
she holds another frame.

You cross the street,
things are better the same,
salt hangs on the breeze,
danger flashes in your eyes,
something in your gait,
no need to ask why,
dash of perfume in the heat,
living glory days,
the wind is in the east,
you will hold the line,
won't be tamed,
nor held to reason why,
lovers set you free,
sparkling jewels for your days,
silk on a silken sea,
red-tiled roofs your paradise,
men chant your name,
this way you'll be fine,
speaking truth is never easy,
especially in your game,
this is not an odyssey,
fortune always plays.

Who can resist,
a warming flame,
leavened by your kiss,
hidden down a government street,
it's a terrible shame,
supplicants sway at your feet,
those who think you’re it,
turn to me and say,
something's gone adrift,
car lanes tick with heat,
sunlight grants them little space,
our time is fleeting,
let them all go shift,
you cry again,
prayer always will absolve us,
for everything we nead,
to blow our troubles away,
they'll hang you from a tree,
uncertain questions,
fill our day,
some fool seeks justice,
whatever that means.

It sometimes works a treat,
sitting stunned around a pool,
vodka tonics cocktail cherries,
what your tongue can't undo,
your bones won't fool,
this wish to denude,
on yellow sand redeem,
all that hides from you,
scrubbed white by the sea,
you can’t shake this mood,
until you hear the news,
just how much you lose,
it's hard to be discreet,
what you've been through,
so try to murmur easy,
when your fire turns blue,
let trees haunt the avenues,
they won't disguise the truth,
all that's left empty,
shake what holds onto you,
find sudden energy,
cast your chains loose.

My eyes fix a place,
where we just carry on,
no one seeks the shade,
or cares about our ways,
a river rises then is gone,
beyond any time frame,
then you stroke my face,
the running lines of alcohol,
a delta of red veins,
soon we’ll be safe,
wolf howls at the moon,
the joy of coming home,
maybe we'll take a train,
search for a winter stove,
somewhere across the Bay,
we’ll raise our game,
a trap of broken runs,
love hums better on skates,
it beats disgrace,
like some walking tomb,
can anyone really say,
we are best alone?

During these long nights,
side by side for harmony,
don't ask me why,
when there's no strain,
a blessed destiny,
shows us the way,
cool as we fly,
why bother to find honesty,
sail with blue airlines,
inquire about gain,
a long, silent history,
we won't do that again,
bags heavy with sighs,
no fun going to seed,
the useless fights,
a morning’s cold rain,
horizons once fizzingly,
splinters sun unnamed,
you say it's my right
you want to be free,
you sing from on high,
below us the sea.
