Before my fame, I only thought of you, and how you slaved, shadows climb in blue smoke, contain an awful truth, shocked again I'm broke, you always hated waste, played successful tunes, now another age, longing for a happy home, I look down red lit rooms, stripped to the bone, inside class cafe's, I could have bloomed, singing night and day, holding to the simple notes, could have soothed, those who felt left alaone, to begin again, is hardly news, these outside dreams, relate our feuds

Can you identify, that ghostly line, between moon and sky, what has been emptied, and other parts denied, on this flood tide, don't need an inquiry, when truth in sight, then simply buried, witness the crime, when you’re in tight, to where rich men dine, some wash down Daiquiri, laugh or fight, it makes them happy, every walk of life, ends with a pity, you should see their wives, by security lights, pooled outside the wire, courses winter twilight, the poor ask why ?

I have no need of you, stepping off this train, even with such terrible news, hate to appear like stone, seeing anyone anyway, on the street or Metro, haven't got a clue, how it will go today, demanding what is due, I arranged the loans, pointed out the lay, told you not to act alone, now you're in the stew, my voice flares and fades, is this really my issue, when I used to moan, I now erase, everything I once called home, how you sing the blues, ask where I'm at today, truth is a bitter fruit, I cry just the same.

You grab for the deeds, laid out on the bar, say a roof brings serenity, blow all my pay, then fly afar, you're a terrible waste, heading to the sea, like something in a bottle, I can't set you free, in a different age, you’d have a fancy car, now you're intestate, you don’t fill my needs, but a warm hazy fog, rolls your childhood dreams, dancing on the waves, I'm the stuff you're not, separating all the wreckage, love's no good for me, it leaves too many scars, holy water is my drink, what's going on?

some mornings ask myself why, can we ever live alone, stars pale before my eyes, might as well be Mars, for all anyone knows, we've sailed out that far, explode within my sight, the wind is black and cold, is this another time, are kids and dogs you want, never to atone, always remain calm, when you hear me cry, running from the phone, just don’t sit and sigh, say there will be scars, like coffee on the chrome, a battle's not a war, no matter how we fight, strain every wretched bone, hold me close tonight, are you coming home ?

Living here's no paradise, never makes the news, why try being nice, might as well be space, useless stars, sea and moon, ladle food to our plate, we need a better life, no matter what we do, many fall away from spite, our song still resonates, a feeling beyond the Blues, when looking over the gate, this town is our life, always something here for you, even naked sodium lights, what we want to create, is sing within our blood, in order to relate, home is on easy nights, when we search for truth, forgive everyone before we die, searching for our youth.

Wouldn't it be great, to forget how much we owe, share out what remains, resist the need to wrong, water skins our bones, keeps within our song, I watch for the rain, tumble down a stony slope, hope it finds the drains, we'll just bumble along, walk with what we know, love makes us strong, fling the time away, greet the evening fallow, trains are always late, I’ll never let you down, or worry about the loans, you've no need to frown, my red lips shine ornate, blush with falling snow, a whisky drink to chase, we'll never be alone.
