Sandy Four
Never one to search for gain,
every task lent,
don't you ever feel the pain,
or get sore,
putting up the neighbour’s fence,
fixing their front door,
no matter what it takes,
you’re always present,
us ungrateful ‘probates,
fools sing for applause,
get drunk ike the rest,
you know the score,
no need to remonstrate,
to bring out our best,
oh, what a player you make,
two and two make four,
you scatter our defences,
never ask for more,
but when the night breaks,
your investment spent
all those cool milkshakes
will you take us then?

What hurts most inside,
something in her face,
her eyes are open wide,
all you need to know,
no longer drums like rain,
in a lover’s mot,
new to a sweetheart's lies,
I see her look away,,
not easy to turn aside,
a million ways to stow,
your fight against the blame,
there’s nowhere else to go,
dishevelled in your cries,
a pirate on the Main,
the barometer calls time,
drink away your woes,
you once jumped rail,
whisky face aglow,
time to step aside,
maybe go to Spain,
no need for reasons why,
just be on your way.

When you start to say,
I always dance alone,
please give me a break,
sit by the fire,
don't make a run,
you’re not a flyer,
not a second to waste
it's lonely on stones,
an Iliad from home,
listening to the cryers,
our bed’s rough-hewn,
calms all desires,
bring us our day,
not a long megaphone,
where we can bray,
we are not like Sapphires,
we’ll never atone,
draw air to the pyre,
it'll be our holiday,
so far from Athlone,
won't inquire about pain,
or where we’re going.

Each gasp makes me a liar,
will he see,
the gaps between my hair,
sometimes just a little move,
heaven’s a place to be,
even if I don’t feel love,
terrible places hard chairs,
they still let me dream,
no one kids me there,
get dressed need a hug,
what about my teeth,
grace comes from above,
act like I don't care,
scrubbed sparkling clean,
I sail through the air,
Joe’s my new Bud,
he might rescue everything,
rise each night in flood,
it's only fair,
when evening turns green,
you take what you can,
it's not me who screams.

You used to be fine,
to drink alone,
a laugh stronger than wine,
no need for weak tea,
humour lachrymose,
jokes your repartee,
now what you find,
hearing the groans,
what is to be kind,
the rain starts to cease,
you still carry the stones,
of that certainty,
speak when it’s right,
never one to ‘phone ,
everything keeps for a while,
you need to believe,
what used to be so,
when we all dreamed,
where is the line,
that you cross going home,
the stuff bathed in time,
all that is gone?

Who will break your news,
struggling to escape,
all the stuff you blew,
no horizon's bright,
if your mark’s a stain,
and you're always right,
don’t make life a curfew,
be frightened of the waves,
knowing what to do,
it nearly is the time,
hear a donkey bray,
you sit by the fire,
before sunrise is due,
your tears seep away,
no one can reach you,
ever wondered why,
people pine for the day,
after long silent nights,
if your moans are true,
a fortune lies at bay,
rain falls on the roof,
it sounds OK.

Look up down the road,
try to be kind,
a smile that’s your own,
the stars show the way,
cold in your time,
you're back here to stay,
no need for a comb,
you'll walk down the miles,
without any crown,
what’s the going rate,
your face alive,
you know how to behave,
where is the window,
a face doesn't shine,
there in your soul,
never mind future days,
don't burn out the fire,
now you’re on your way,
tell all what you know,
it’s been more than a while,
since the cock crows,
the song of a child.
