Living here's no paradise,
it never makes the news,
this place doesn't splice,
it could be great,
stars and sea like perfume,
stardust on our plate,
all we need's a better life,
show what we can do,
maybe a wages hike,
our songs still resonate,
a feeling without the Blues,
won't find a better rate,
this barrio is our smile,
all it holds is true,
naked without lights,
it is there to create,
makes us sing anew,
we won’t hesitate,
to ditch these bitter rights,
where we stick like glue,
even the way we cry,
stays within the loop.

You appear stoned,
your picture up in lights,
or written on the wall,
if love holds true,
knows which bells to strike,
it’s because they love you,
tell me you're not lonely,
no matter how we fight,
or beat our yellow bones,
they call you Miss Fortune,
pretty before your time,
they don’t see your blues,
the screams down a ‘phone,
dreaming of paradise,
a flame not at home,
your big talented hue,
that passes out of sight,
when rain is due,
clouds ride black and bold,
across the winter sky,
you sing less to fold,
than fend off time.

When you see a shining star,
does it make you uneasy,
shows you just how far,
you’d kid and dodge,
to stay as you please,
in a warm hazy fog,
post letters to the front,
across a certain sea,
let them cross that bar,
it's not what you want,
forget the cars,
all the stuff you don't,
pour water in my jar,
make my fires decrease,
tell me what's going on,
like someone from afar,
in a film by Spike Lee,
music by Billy Maher,
singing for eternity,
you scatter all my needs,
like ashes on the bar,
a terrible intensity.

Shadows make strokes,
against the falling rain,
tell everyone I’m broke,
echoes of an empty suitcase,
another sad holiday,
it's no news to me,
at St Anthony’s alone,
loss carries uncertainty,
when you need loans,
carried over till payday,
you sink without trace,
it’s my form of grace,
songs of a dismal tone,
lonely trains,
whistle and moan,
to begin again,
lovers gone on 'planes,
or down the Freeway,
once a happy soul,
reclaimed from the cafes,
listen to this joke,
I’m back in town again.

The year Lady passed away,
I couldn't get past the blues,
was shrunken day to day,
I wanted to be alone,
not see anyone new,
on the street or Metro,
but you are an angel,
I didn't have a clue,
you became my sage,
arranged all the loans,
brought me back anew,
put jelly on my bones,
before this game,
I didn’t think of you,
only what a waste,
that she's gone,
lost all she gave us,
done,
then you began to play,
all my successful tunes,
now it’s a different rage,
another costume.

Crack is my baby,
I accept her burnt cheer,
it brings me the cradle,
a city of stones,
down avenues of tears,
misery wears different clothes,
love is my trade,
handled without fear,
a good girl these days,
long journey's to the coast,
nothing's too dear,
except how I flow,
who needs the shame,
we have all the gear,
I'm part of the fame,
never a sideshow,
let's make it clear,
the past is well known,
what is arranged,
not allowed to come near,
a cry that won't echo,
in turbulent years.

Who hasn't thought,
alone and vexed,
about what we’ve been taught,
a drink of wine,
the burdens of text,
anniversaries supine,
what we could have bought,
trying to live our best,
life is short,
with lovers Online,
who’ll pop up next,
wasting our time,
generally divorced,
lying through a spun web,
drunk and overwrought,
unspoken down the line,
I'm sorely perplexed,
love’s not a crime,
cast a bed of noughts,
a pregnancy test,
is not to be forced,
filed like the rest.
