Joe
When we begin to pray
you dance and sigh,
for lands far away,
it's a lonely path alone,
not having a light,
an Iliad far from home,
we sit out the fray,
anchors hold the bite,
ride the tide and wait,
listen to the stones,
it’s better than to cry,
soon we’ll soon be gone,
so far away,
let us not fight,
find reasons more to say,
our horizon’s honed,
lead us from this Bay,
safe in our bones,
there'll be no strain,
the moon is our right,
to bring us good days,
this warm loving night.

Can you identify,
that easy thing,
between moon and sky,
what has been emptied,
makes other parts cling,
to this waterside,
you need no inquiry,
when dreams become nothing,
and then buried,
who needs a Dime,
when we all think,
here’s such a good time,
some drive Mercedes,
laugh as they sing,
stuff that makes us happy,
each stage of life,
can end in a blink,
some kiss their wives,
in a summer's twilight,
you might hear it ring,
like bells on a kite,
our need to believe. .

Don't blame it on fate,
that love twists,
a trick played too late,
that earthly groan,
like it has a stitch,
has me gone,
will something change,
depends who's playing this,
it'd be a cheek to say,
spin me around my home,
take music from the hits,
throw me a bone,
hearts slip in this space,
tumble with the critics,
waiting for a date,
a dancer from another zone,
with a yellow list,
turns to me and goes,
life can be a race,
when you figure it,
who will show their face,
when something’s missing ?

It's quiet here now,
after years of the need,
my face smooth as stone,
I still see the grave,
where praise be,
his soul is saved,
we arrived on the brow,
to this new territory,
why only He knows,
grant me the days,
where I can act carefree,
not hemmed in by prelates ,
men with barren tones,
say have one on me,
cry on my shoulder,
plead for a stay,
they’re here for a reason,
to me it’s the same,
in the blue dawn,
bells ring exclusively,
I make my way home,
over there is the sea.

Laugh at hopes betrayed,
gather holy things,
take them to my grave,
make me say a truth,
to every little thing,
notes arrive on cue,
what a dance they make,
on woven silks they bring,
threads to hide their face,
if only they knew,
love is not a circus ring,
but murders quite a few,
smoke hangs in the rain,
they ask me to sing,
the songs of Billy Holiday,
ships play lovely tunes,
I really love the spray,
it blows away the Blues,
I’ll gamble it all and say,
life to me is everything,
don’t regret a single day,
grey dawn's lightening.

Forget all the clowns,
that come to woo you,
half of them in chains,
as loud as your woes,
ships blow hooters,
every song sings of home,
not just in their parlance,
but down each avenue ,
who can fault your tan,
you reign without a throne,
bars are full of losers,
you’d rather be alone,
nothing comes by chance,
your times are fewer,
forget about the past,
the barefoot walk on stones,
who would ever refute,
a life that’s gone,
strange this coming down,
aboard a Cargo Schooner,
no swish of ballroom gown,
you’re still a cruiser.

You don’t gesticulate
at your inventive best,
when others sneer, berate,
you open every door,
mend all our fences,
never see us scared,
chattering we begin to shake,
drink like all the rest,
we won't stop or hesitate,
fools we sing forever more,
never put us to the test,
ask what's the score,
the night's cool probate,
resides in the West,
no matter the toll it takes,
forbidden troubadours,
demand our presence,
you never leave us forlorn,
but cool you slake,
whatever our cask or blend,
sweep away our pain,
stay good friends.
